Model, R&B Divas TV star and real-life singer/songwriter Syleena Johnson is known for touching souls with her music. Her life alone has drafted a blueprint for empowerment.
Syleena Johnson provided the gritty soul fueled soundtrack that was early 2000’s R&B and then transformed herself undoubtedly into an R&B Diva. She’s had some hiccups and lessons along the way but has never been shy about her journey to stardom.
Noted as one of the most undeniable talents of our time, Johnson is honestly doing what is in her blood to do.
As the daughter of Legendary Soul/Blues Singer Syl Johnson, Johnson (Syleena) grew up around music and heavily influenced by the greats such as Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Tina Turner, The Dells, Mavis Staples. Johnson got her start in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois singing in her high school choir. She was naturally a stand out in the choir and encouraged by her peers to pursue singing professionally, unfortunately Johnson didn’t get that same support at home. Her father wasn’t very supportive of her professional music pursuits because of his lack of stardom, causing some slight derailment in Johnson’s attempt to be a singer.
While attending Illinois State University, Johnson was discovered by a Jive Records music executive after a demo of her’s had been handed off by a close friend. Johnson was more than surprised than anything stating that “demos just don’t get heard like that, that’s a miracle”.
After landing with Jive Records, Johnson began working on her the now infamous “Chapters of her life” album series that spans from 2001 with Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness to 2014’s Chapter 6: Couples Therapy and then her most recent 2017 release, Rebirth of Soul. After a such an extensive and successful music career gaining a host of award nominations including a Grammy nod for her work on Kanye West’s hit single “All Falls Down” in 2005, Johnson made the jump to tv star. She enjoyed mainstream exposure appearing on such television shows as TV One’s “R&B Divas: Atlanta” and WE TV’s “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars”.
In 2017 Johnson was then cast as one of the co-stars on TV ONE’s Sister Circle, her transition into television was an easy one as it was new way of reaching her loyal fanbase. She appeared in the reality series R&B Divas: Atlanta and now is making more black woman history as one of the co-hosts of TV One daytime talk show Sister Circle.
Sister Circle gave Johnson the platform to let her fans get to know her even more outside of music. One of her most passionate ventures is SheLean Health & Fitness, which helps women in the area of health, nutrition and fitness. SheLean Nutrition, Health and Fitness is an online company created to cater to women of various demographics. SheLean believes that optimal health and wellness starts in the home with the woman, who is the threshold of the family.
Her journey with her own mental and physical health gave Johnson the inspiration to pen her first book, “The Weight is Over”. Her self-help book “The Weight Is Over” chronicles her battles with self-acceptance that began in adolescence into her music career. Her heart-warming story outlines her compelling and painful journey toward optimal mental, emotional, and physical health. Johnson states the book is “ honest, heart-warming and human, it shares her pain and progression, providing tactful ways to identify and eliminate stressors to sustain optimal mental, emotional and physical health. A love letter to life’s lessons”
Grammy-nominated singer Syleena Johnson has released plenty of R&B and soul music over her career. This book is about what was happening behind the scenes. She overcame those challenges, and now, as an advocate of wellness in mind, body, and soul, is sharing her story to help others.
